Shopify Plus Features & Benefits: A Shopify Agency’s Honest Take

TL;DR

We build Shopify Plus stores for a living, so here’s the short version most articles skip. Shopify Plus features worth caring about: a checkout you can actually rebuild, native B2B and wholesale tools, and free product bundling.

Shopify Plus benefits that show up in real numbers: fewer abandoned checkouts and wholesale revenue without hiring more people. It starts around $2,300 a month, and it’s worth it once you’ve hit a real limit, not because your revenue crossed some number.

Introduction

If you’re considering Shopify Plus, you’ve probably read three articles that all say the same thing, copied from Shopify’s own pricing page.

We’re not doing that here. We build Shopify Plus stores for a living, we talk to merchants before and after they upgrade, and we know exactly where the marketing pitch and the real experience don’t match.

This guide breaks down the real Shopify Plus features and Shopify Plus benefits, the way we’d explain them to a client sitting across the table from us.

What is Shopify Plus & When Should Merchants Upgrade?

Shopify Plus is Shopify’s enterprise plan for high-volume or complex stores. It adds custom checkout, native B2B selling, multiple linked stores, deeper automation, and higher platform limits that standard Shopify plans don’t include.

Pricing starts around $2,300 a month and scales with your revenue, not a flat fee.

In our client work, most merchants upgrade for one of three reasons.

  • They’ve hit a wall on checkout customization.
  • They’re launching a wholesale channel alongside retail.
  • Or they’re running more than one storefront and are tired of managing them separately.

Shopify Plus Benefits? Why Leading Companies Opt for Shopify Plus

Every Shopify Plus benefits article lists the same four or five bullets with no ranking. Here’s how we’d actually rank them, from most to least likely to matter for a real business.

1. Fewer abandoned checkouts, more recovered revenue (highest impact)

Standard Shopify gives every merchant the same checkout, with no way to fix what’s driving people away at the last step.

Plus lets you rebuild that checkout, and since abandonment is where most lost revenue actually lives, this is the single biggest Shopify Plus advantage in dollar terms, not just a UI upgrade.

It’s the one we tell clients to evaluate first.

2. Wholesale revenue without hiring more sales reps (high impact if you sell wholesale)

Gartner’s 2026 survey of B2B buyers found 67% now prefer a rep-free buying experience.

With Shopify Plus, businesses get a self-serve wholesale storefront that lets buyers place their own orders instead of emailing a rep, which means you can grow B2B revenue without growing B2B headcount.

This is where Shopify Plus B2B features genuinely earn their keep.

3. Less operational busywork (medium impact)

Picture a store selling to everyday shoppers and boutiques at the same time. A lot of merchants run wholesale on a spreadsheet or a second platform while retail stays on Shopify. Someone has to update stock in two places by hand.

Sooner or later the two numbers stop matching, usually right when a boutique orders the last five units you’d already sold online.

One back end for both sides removes that guesswork while saving time, making it one of the Shopify Plus advantages that never shows up on a features page.

4. Faster expansion without doubling your team (medium impact, situational)

Launching a new region or a second brand used to mean a second team managing a second login. Shopify Plus Organization lets one team run both, so growth doesn’t automatically mean a bigger payroll. Skip this line item if you only run one store; it won’t save you anything.

5. Fewer manual order and fulfillment tasks (commonly overstated)

Shopify Flow is actually free on every plan now, not just Plus, so that claim alone shouldn’t be the reason you upgrade. What Plus really adds is the ability to send HTTP requests from a workflow, and run tasks built by custom apps.

In plain terms, that’s what lets a workflow reach outside Shopify, into your 3PL or your fraud tool, and actually do something. Most automations just tag an order and stop there.

That gap, between tagging an order and doing the work for you, is the real Shopify Plus features difference.

Most sales pages present Flow itself as the Plus perk. It isn’t, and that overstatement is one of the more common myths we correct with clients.

6. Fewer chargebacks slipping through on high-risk orders (situational, bigger impact for high-ticket or drop-ship catalogs)

If you sell anything a fraudster would want to resell, electronics, gift cards, limited sneakers, standard fraud flags catch some orders and miss others.

Plus lets you build your own holding rules in Flow, so an order that trips your specific risk pattern gets held for review automatically, before it ships, not after you’ve already eaten the chargeback.

That’s the real payoff behind Shopify Plus fraud protection, not the badge on a fraud app.

7. One order queue instead of five (medium impact once you’re selling in more than one place)

Once a store sells online, in a physical shop, and through a marketplace or two, someone ends up checking several dashboards just to know what needs packing today.

Plus merchants can pull retail, wholesale, and in-person orders into one queue, with higher API limits and Flow automations doing the sorting instead of a person.

That means fewer missed orders and fewer late shipments, the kind of mistake that’s easy to make when a team is watching five screens instead of one.

Some Out-of-the-Box Shopify Plus Features for Your eCommerce Business

Here’s the part most comparison articles skip: two of the most useful Shopify Plus features aren’t on any pricing page. They’re buried in developer docs, and we only found them by building with them.

Picture a mid-size apparel brand we’ve worked with in this exact spot. They’d outgrown their checkout, wanted a wholesale tier for boutique retailers, and were paying a third-party app just to bundle three SKUs into one listing.

That’s three separate problems, and Plus answers all three natively, each one doubling as a real Shopify Plus benefits case, not a hypothetical one.

1. Shopify Plus Checkout

Shopify Plus checkout runs on Checkout Extensibility, which Shopify has now rolled out to every Plus store. It lets developers add custom UI blocks, upsells, and validation logic directly into checkout, instead of relying on the old checkout.liquid file, which Shopify has retired.

This is the groundwork behind proper Shopify Plus checkout customization work, the kind most stores need once they move off legacy checkout scripts.

2. Shopify Plus B2B Features

Shopify Plus B2B features used to be Plus-only, full stop. Shopify has since given other plans a lighter version, but Plus still ships the whole toolkit: as many company accounts as you need, your own price list for each customer, quantity rules, and net payment terms, no extra app required.

If a real wholesale launch is on your roadmap, this is usually the fastest honest path to get there, and it’s worth planning a proper Shopify Plus B2B wholesale setup before you flip it on.

Our take: worth it once wholesale is a real revenue line, not a side experiment. Still testing the waters with a handful of accounts? A simpler app on standard Shopify gets you there for less money while you find out if the demand is real.

3. Native Product Bundling (Combined Listings)

Almost nobody talks about this one, and it’s honestly one of the clearest examples of Shopify quietly handing Plus merchants something everyone else pays for.

It comes with Combined Listings, Shopify’s own tool, which groups variants like size and color into one product page instead of several.

Third-party bundling apps charge a monthly fee to do that exact same job. Shopify gives it away free, but only on Plus and Enterprise.

Our take: small features, real money. We’d put it below checkout and B2B on the priority list, but it’s the easiest one to point to when a client asks what they’re actually getting for the extra spend.

4. Cart Transform Functions

Most cart discount apps fake their price change with a JavaScript trick on the page, which works fine until a shopper checks out with Shop Pay or Apple Pay and skips that page entirely.

The discount vanishes and the store ships the item at full cost.

Shopify’s Cart Transform tool fixes that by changing the price on Shopify’s own server instead, so it holds no matter how someone pays. For custom apps, this only works on Plus or a development store.

Our take: this matters more than its spot on most comparison lists suggests, but only if you run dynamic pricing, bundles, or deposit products. Simple, fixed pricing? You’ll genuinely never notice this feature exists, and that’s fine.

5. raud Tools and Order Protection

A lot of competitor articles oversell Shopify Plus fraud protection, so let’s be straight about it. Shopify Protect, the platform’s built-in chargeback protection, isn’t locked to Plus.

Every plan gets it free, for orders that qualify. What Plus actually adds is the ability to write your own fraud-holding rules in Flow, using the HTTP Request action.

That means an order that trips your specific risk pattern gets held automatically before it ships, instead of getting flagged after you’ve already lost the money.

Our take: don’t upgrade just for fraud protection. It genuinely helps high-risk categories, but most stores already get 90% of the value from Shopify Protect, and that part is free everywhere.

6. Order Management and Multi-Channel Selling

Shopify Plus order management gets a real boost from higher API limits and Flow automations that can batch-tag, split, or route orders on their own, without a developer touching each one by hand.

Add a proper Shopify Plus multi-channel sales app setup on top, POS for the physical store plus marketplaces and social selling, and a Plus store can run retail, wholesale, and in-person sales out of one order queue instead of five separate dashboards.

Our take: this pays off in the best way at a real order volume with a thousand orders a month and up. Below that, doing it by hand on standard Shopify is still manageable, honestly.

7. Support, at a Realistic Level

Shopify Plus support is the one place we’d ask you to double-check your assumptions before you buy. It used to come with a named Merchant Success Manager for every Plus merchant, no exceptions.

Then in 2023, Shopify scaled that back. Stores under roughly $2 million a year in sales lost dedicated support completely. The $2 million to $10 million tier kept access, but only for escalations.

So if dedicated support is part of why you want a Shopify Plus upgrade, find out exactly which tier you’d land in before you sign anything, not after.

Our Tip

We’ve seen more than one client get upgraded expecting hand-holding, then get surprised by this change. If support is your main reason for upgrading, a good Shopify development services partner will do more for you than the tier you’re likely to actually get.

Leading Businesses Leveraging Shopify Plus Advantages

Skip the logo slide. Here’s what three real Shopify Plus stores actually did, and what they got back.

Three brands logo

Gymshark left Adobe Commerce after an 8-hour Black Friday crash cost the brand an estimated £100,000 in lost sales.

On Shopify Plus, they use Shopify Scripts to run checkout perks, like a free gift on qualifying orders, and Shopify POS to sell at pop-up expos around the world. The brand did £41 million in sales the year after the move.

Rebecca Minkoff added 3D and AR views to 50+ handbags on Shopify Plus. Shoppers who interacted with the 3D models were 44% more likely to add the item to cart and 27% more likely to actually order it. Shoppers who used AR were 65% more likely to buy.

Dalfilo, a European home-linen brand, runs its consumer store and its B2B wholesale portal for hotels and B&Bs on the same Shopify Plus setup, with Shopify Flow automating order handling behind the scenes. Result: over 1,000% growth in four years and €9.1 million in turnover by 2024.

Notice the pattern: none of them upgraded for the logo. Each one had a specific operational problem, checkout downtime, product confidence, or a wholesale channel that needed its own portal, and Plus solved that specific problem. That’s the same bar we’d hold your business to.

Shopify Plus Pricing: How Much Does It Actually Cost?

Shopify Plus pricing starts around $2,300 a month on a 3-year term, or closer to $2,500 a month on a 1-year term, for stores under roughly $800,000 in monthly GMV. Above that, it moves to a revenue-share model instead of a flat fee.

What Sets the Price What We Know
Base platform fee ~$2,300/mo on a 3-year term, ~$2,500/mo on a 1-year term
Revenue threshold Kicks in once you’re doing more than ~$800,000 a month in GMV
Above that threshold Shopify shifts from the flat fee to a revenue-share model, capped around $40,000/mo
Payment processing Rates vary by payment method and by what you negotiate, not one fixed number
Contract length Usually 1 or 3 years; shorter terms cost more per month
Multiple stores Each extra store under Plus Organization can add to the total

When You Should Choose Shopify Plus?

You’re a good candidate for a Shopify Plus upgrade if two or more of these are true.

  • You’re doing over a million dollars a year in online sales.
  • You need a wholesale channel live within a quarter.
  • You’ve hit real limits on checkout customization.
  • You’re running, or about to run, more than one storefront.

Here’s the same filter laid out side by side, so you can see where standard Shopify still does the job:

Decision Factor Standard Shopify Is Enough Shopify Plus Makes Sense
Annual online sales Under ~$1M, and you haven’t hit a specific limit Over ~$1M, or you’ve already hit a named limit
Wholesale / B2B A handful of test accounts, still validating demand A real, growing revenue line that needs native Shopify Plus B2B features
Checkout Needs a theme tweak here and there Needs custom logic, upsells, or validation that checkout.liquid can’t do
Storefronts Running one storefront, one region Running, or about to run, more than one under Plus Organization
Order volume Manual work is still manageable Manual tagging and multiple dashboards are piling up

If none of those Plus-column rows describe you yet, the upgrade probably isn’t worth the jump this year.

If you do meet that bar, the harder part isn’t picking the plan, it’s the build. Checkout Extensibility, Cart Transform, and B2B setup all need a developer who has actually shipped on Plus before, not just read the docs.

Final Thoughts

Shopify Plus mainly changes what you’re allowed to build, not how nice the platform looks. Once you see it that way, the pricing makes more sense, and so does deciding whether you need it yet.

The brands that get real value from Plus usually aren’t the ones with the most sales. They’re the ones who already know exactly which limit they’re hitting, checkout, wholesale, or too many storefronts, before they upgrade.

Figure out your limit first. The plan follows from that.

Once you’ve found your limit, the harder part starts: getting the build right. That’s the part where most Plus projects actually go sideways, not the plan you pick.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is Shopify Plus worth it for a small store?

Only if you’ve already hit a real limit on standard Shopify, like checkout customization or wholesale selling. Revenue alone isn’t the deciding factor, and we’d tell a small store with no specific limitation to wait on the Shopify Plus upgrade.

What is the revenue threshold for Shopify Plus?

There’s no hard revenue requirement to sign up. But Shopify Plus pricing changes above roughly $800,000 in monthly GMV, when it shifts from a flat platform fee toward a revenue-share model.

Does Shopify Plus have lower transaction fees than standard Shopify?

It depends on your payment method and negotiated agreement. Confirm current Shopify Plus payment processing fees directly with Shopify before you budget around a specific number.

Can you downgrade from Shopify Plus?

Yes, you can for sure. But moving data, apps, and custom checkout code back to a standard plan takes real migration work, similar to any platform move.

How long does a Shopify Plus migration take?

It depends on catalog size, how much checkout customization you need, and whether B2B setup is part of the project. Ask for a timeline based on your specific store, not a generic estimate.
