Works with the theme you already have
Varn is a theme app extension, so it works on any Online Store 2.0 theme. Instead of building its own picker, it drives the one your theme already ships, and steps aside entirely when your theme has native swatches for that option.
Setup
The setup wizard checks your theme for you, finds your color options for you, and names your colors for you. You confirm, and you are live.
One button opens your theme editor with the Varn app embed already selected. Toggle it on, hit save, done. Varn then verifies it is live by reading your theme’s own settings, so the checkmark is a fact, not a guess.
Search your catalog, filter to products that actually have a color option, and pick one. Or skip ahead and hit Auto-configure all products to do the whole catalog in one pass.
Only color options are offered, so Size and Material are never turned into swatches by accident. Varn recognizes Color, Colour, Couleur, Farbe, Colore, Kleur and Farve out of the box, and you can teach it your own name.
One click reads your option names and fills in the colors it is confident about, in ten languages. When a name is not a color, a vision model looks at the product photo instead. Everything stays editable, and a live preview shows the result as you work.
Save, and the swatches are on your storefront. Nothing was written into your theme, and nothing is left behind if you ever uninstall.
Capabilities
“Navy / Cream” renders as navy and cream, split down the middle. Photo swatches upload at full resolution through Shopify’s Files API, so there is no quality cap and no blurry thumbnails. Values with no color and no photo fall back to readable text pills rather than a row of identical grey circles.
A sold-out color stays visible with a strike through it, styled as a strike, a fade, or left plain. Varn refuses to select a value your theme has disabled, so it can never sneak into a cart. Never color alone, so screen readers hear “Sage, sold out” too.
Pick Lilac and the gallery shows only the lilac photos, in the order you dragged them, with your chosen cover first. It re-applies itself even after your theme re-renders the section. Free on your first 5 products; plans raise the limit to 150, 1,500 or unlimited.
If your reds and blues live as different products, group them and they appear as one color row on every page. Drag to set the order, and a product can never sit in two groups by mistake. Your first group is free; plans raise it to 5, 15 or 50.
Anonymous click and add-to-cart tracking per color, plus sold-out demand: how many shoppers clicked a color that was not available. Then plain-language advice on what to restock, feature, investigate or retire.
Collection pages, search results, quick-view pop-ups and featured rows. Hovering a chip swaps the card photo, and clicking it can switch the card in place instead of navigating away.
Agent readiness
When someone asks an AI shopping assistant for “a sage green linen shirt in a medium”, it does not look at your photography. It reads structured data: category, color, size, target gender, image alt text. Miss those and you are invisible to that shopper.
Varn scores every product out of 100 on exactly those signals, shows you the literal record an agent receives, and fixes the gaps in one click, on every plan including Free. It also publishes proper ProductGroup structured data for you, rendered server-side, at zero JavaScript cost.

One click writes descriptive alt text for every product image and sets the standard target-gender attribute. Ambiguous products are skipped rather than guessed.
Variants · Free to start
In the Variants wizard you map photos to each color and drag them into order, exactly like arranging product media in Shopify. On your product page, picking Clay then shows only the clay photos, in exactly that order, with your chosen cover first.
Lilac owns 3 photos. Shoppers who pick Lilac see these, cover first.
Style studio
Shape, size, spacing, borders, labels, hover effects, sold-out treatment. Change it here and watch the swatches update, exactly the way the real style studio works inside the app.

Every color on the card, hover to change the photo.
The same chips on anything your search app returns.
Chips inside the pop-up, without doubling up your theme’s own.
Home page rows, featured collections, related products.
AI setup
AI setup fills your color values in for you. It reads your option names in ten languages, and when a name is not a color it sends the product photo to a vision model and asks which color it is looking at.
5 values waiting.
Swatch analytics · Advance
Varn counts swatch clicks and add-to-carts per color, anonymously: no shopper data, no cookies. It also reports sold-out demand, meaning how many shoppers clicked a color that was not available to buy.

How Varn behaves in your store
Four design decisions that shape how Varn runs on your storefront.
The storefront script is deferred and split by feature, so a page downloads only the part your settings actually need, and the build enforces a size budget on it. Swatch data is read by your theme at render time, so Varn adds no request for it and no layout shift.
deferred, split by feature
Varn does not build its own variant picker. Clicking a swatch selects the option in your theme’s own control, so add to cart is still pure Shopify and the wrong variant cannot reach a checkout. If our script never loads, the shopper still gets your theme’s working dropdown.
progressive enhancement, by design
Varn is a theme app extension, not a script tag, so there is nothing to inject and nothing to clean up. Uninstall it and your theme is exactly as you found it. It never edits a theme file, and it only ever reads your theme to check whether it is switched on.
read-only theme access
No code, no theme editing, no Liquid. The setup wizard verifies each step for you and blocks the ones you are not ready for, with the reason written on the button. Every screen has a live preview, and every style change can be rolled back from a saved backup.

Powered by Enstacked Technologies
Varn is made by Enstacked Technologies, a commerce engineering studio that builds Shopify themes, apps and storefronts. We wrote Varn the way we write client work: on the current Shopify platform, with a hard performance budget, an accessibility standard, and a test suite that has to stay green before anything ships.
That is why the storefront engine has a size limit its own build enforces, why the app drives your theme’s picker instead of replacing it, and why every screen has an empty state, a loading state and an error state. It is also why support goes to the people who wrote the code.
Questions
Varn works on any Online Store 2.0 theme, including Dawn and Horizon, because it is a theme app extension that drives your theme’s existing variant control rather than replacing it. It has specific handling for the way Dawn and Horizon re-render their pickers, and it detects your theme’s own native swatches and steps aside rather than rendering a second row.
The storefront script is deferred and split by feature, so a page downloads only the parts your settings actually use, and our build holds every one of them to a size budget. Swatch data arrives inside the page your theme already renders, so Varn adds no network request for it and shifts nothing on the page.
Nothing is left behind. Varn never writes into a theme file and never injects a script tag, so removing the app removes the storefront code with it and your theme returns to its own dropdowns. Your product data is untouched, because Varn stores its settings separately rather than rewriting your products.
No. Clicking a swatch selects the value in your theme’s own option control and fires its native change event. Your theme’s form is still what submits to Shopify, so there is no parallel cart path that could disagree with the picker. Varn also refuses to select a value your theme has disabled.
No. Setup is a five-step wizard that verifies your theme for you, shows only the options that are actually colors, and fills in the colors it recognizes. If you do want to go further, the Advance plan adds a custom CSS field, but nothing on any plan requires it.
Varn recognizes Color, Colour, Couleur, Farbe, Colore, Kleur and Farve automatically. If yours is called Shade, Finish or anything else, add the name once in the style studio and it is treated the same way everywhere.
Two passes, and we would rather be specific than mysterious about it. The first matches your option value names against a color dictionary spanning ten languages, applies only the matches it is confident about, runs inside the app and costs nothing. The second is for the values a name cannot answer: Varn sends the product photo to a vision model, which reports the color it can see, so your existing photos get paired with the right variant. That pass is metered in AI usage credits, one credit per photo. Anything either pass is unsure about is left for you to set.
The storefront text is translated into 18 languages and follows whichever locale your shopper is browsing in. Assignments are translation-aware, so a color keeps its swatch across every translated version of the option. The admin interface itself is English.
Room, mostly. Free gives you unlimited color swatches on product pages, collections, search and quick view plus 250 AI usage credits a month, so plenty of stores never need to leave it. Paid plans raise three limits: how many products can have per-color photo galleries (5, 150, 1,500 or unlimited), how many AI usage credits you get each month (250, 1,500, 15,000 or 50,000) and how many product groups you can build (1, 5, 15 or 50). Grow and up also show swatches on products you have not set up yet, and Advance and Premium add swatch analytics and the advanced styling tools.
One credit is one product photo the AI looks at. Matching your option value names against the color dictionary is unlimited on every plan and spends nothing. Credits are only spent when Varn sends a photo to the vision model to find out which color it shows. Every plan includes a monthly allowance, from 250 on Free to 50,000 on Premium, and it resets at the start of each month. Run out and AI setup keeps working from names and color detection until the reset.
Every paid plan is free for 7 days. Pick a plan, approve it on Shopify’s own confirmation screen, and the first 7 days cost nothing. Cancel inside those 7 days and you are never billed. The Free plan needs no trial at all, so you can equally start there and upgrade the day you outgrow it.
