Shopify Fall Edition 2026 is Out: Updates You Can’t Afford to Miss!

TL;DR

Shopify Fall Edition 2026 is out, with more than 150 updates. This guide covers the changes that matter most before Black Friday on November 27, 2026.

Shopify Fall Edition 2026 is out, and if you are in the Shopify ecosystem, make sure to read it. Black Friday falls on November 27, and several of these updates change how shoppers find you, pay you, and dispute you.

Shopify shipped more than 150 updates on October 28. Most won’t touch your store this month. A handful will. This guide sorts the two, explains each update in plain words, and ends with a short list of what to do before November 27.

What is the Shopify Fall Edition 2026?

The Shopify Fall Edition 2026, named Exponential, is Shopify’s autumn product release. It shipped on October 28, 2026, with more than 150 updates. The main additions are Shop Pay checkout inside AI agents, a Sidekick-powered editor called Canvas, a redesigned admin, stronger fraud tools, and new developer APIs.

A. AI agents can now sell your products

Shoppers are starting to ask AI assistants where to buy things. Shopify’s answer is to put Shop Pay and your product data inside those assistants.

1. Shop Pay checkout inside AI agents

Shoppers can now buy from brands on or off Shopify through Claude Duet, Grok Bot, and Instinct, and Shop Pay also works in Muse. A shopper finds a product in the chat, approves the purchase, and pays with Shop Pay without leaving the conversation.

2. Selling in Google AI Mode and Gemini

You can also sell in Google Search, including AI Mode, and in the Gemini app. Checkout is powered by Shopify. Shoppers buy inside the chat, and you manage the order in your admin like any other.

3. Catalog eligibility and your knowledge base

This is the quiet part that matters most. A new admin view shows whether your store is eligible for Shopify Catalog and what to change if it isn’t. Catalog now also passes your compare-at price to AI agents, so a markdown shows up with no extra setup.

4. Manage your store from the assistant you already use

You can now connect your store to Grok, Gemini, Meta’s Muse, and Microsoft Copilot. You can also pin Shopify in the ChatGPT sidebar to see sales, sessions, and conversion rate. Agents can build things too:

  • Turn a digital file into a product in Claude or ChatGPT, with pricing, fulfillment, and a share link.
  • Describe what you want to sell and import products from other sellers through Shopify Collective.
  • Start a store preview from the Shopify CLI before you even sign up.

Our take: switch on now (the eligibility check and knowledge base). Both take under an hour and cost nothing. Availability of each channel depends on your store and market, so run the eligibility check first. The assistant connectors are situational. They are handy for solo founders, but a team with an established admin routine won’t gain much from them yet.

B. Canvas and Sidekick: build and run your store by chatting

Canvas is the most talked-about piece of this Shopify latest update. Shopify actually launched it on October 1, a few weeks before the Edition, and rolled it out gradually.

1. Canvas shows your whole store at once

Canvas is a design surface that shows every page of your store laid out together. You pan across them, zoom into any detail, and tell Sidekick what to change. Changes appear in real time, and you are editing a render of the real theme code, not a flat mockup.

Expert Tip

Try Canvas on a duplicate of your theme, never on the live one. Since Canvas edits real theme code, have a developer read the generated sections before you publish them to your live store.

2. What some recaps leave out about Canvas

Some recaps describe Canvas as the new theme editor. Shopify itself says it is not replacing the existing editor yet. Reports on the launch also list some real limits:

  • It works with Shopify-made themes and custom themes. Third-party themes are not supported.
  • It is desktop only.
  • Staff need the edit-code permission on themes.
  • Duplicating a theme creates a copy that is edited only in Canvas.

If you rely on app blocks or a Theme Store theme from an independent developer, plan to stay in the current editor for now.

3. Sidekick can now do bigger jobs

Sidekick got broader too. It can build a plan, then apply many changes after one approval.

  • It can rewrite descriptions, write code, search the web, and remember your preferences.
  • Create or edit draft orders, with highlighted changes to review before you save.
  • Turn an uploaded or generated design into a print-on-demand product.
  • Answer pricing questions using Shopify Smart Pricing models.
  • Explain a lower payout or what is driving chargebacks.
  • Help build checkout customizations in the checkout and accounts editor.

Sidekick also tests its own ideas now. It uses SimGym to test a recommended store change, and you choose which tested changes to apply.

Our take: worth testing, but after Black Friday. Redesigning your store in the middle of peak season is a risk you don’t need. The multi-step Sidekick edits are situational. They save the most time for stores with large catalogs.

C. Online store, merchandising and checkout updates

1. Rollouts: schedule a whole launch as one change

Rollouts let you bundle your theme, checkout configuration, catalogs, and discounts into one scheduled launch or experiment. It can reach headless builds, Shopify POS, Google Shopping, and the Shop app. Catalog rollouts can schedule price and publishing changes, then roll back on their own when the promotion ends.

For a Black Friday sale, that means your prices and discount can switch back automatically on Monday morning. Nobody has to remember at midnight.

2. Checkout changes

Most of these are marked as rolling out soon or coming soon:

  • Custom fields in the checkout and accounts editor for gift messages and delivery instructions.
  • A tiled payment layout that replaces radio buttons with a compact set of options.
  • A stacked form layout that reduces scrolling and makes errors easier to fix.
  • A thank-you page animation between payment and order confirmation.
  • Apple Pay by QR code in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and other browsers, using an iPhone.

3. Search, languages and Shop sign-in

Predictive search now gives better suggestions as shoppers type. Shopify reports that add-to-carts from search improved by 8%. You can also launch in Arabic, Hebrew, or Urdu, since right-to-left languages are now supported. Shopify also added 13 more languages, including Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu.

Businesses not on Shopify can add Shop sign-in to their own store, so returning customers get a personalized experience.

4. Merchandising

Collections can now combine products, apps, and variants from different sources. The product page lets you edit product and variant details together, with bulk controls. If variants are still new to you, our guide on how to add Shopify product variants covers the basics. You can also add up to 20 barcodes per variant, with format checks, and scan any of them in POS.

D. Payments, fraud and tax

1. Shopify Protect

Shopify Protect helps with:

  • Blocking high-risk checkout attempts before payment is authorized.
  • Explains which factors raised an order’s risk level.
  • Writes AI-generated chargeback responses for each bank and reason code.
  • Attaches carrier proof of delivery automatically for order didn’t arrive cases.
  • Lets you write your own rules on risk signals, test them against past orders, and alert when drift.
  • Chargeback protection will extend to orders that did not use Shop Pay. This one is coming soon.

Shopify says merchants using it have won 60% more “product not received” disputes. That is Shopify’s own figure, so treat it as a best case.

2. Tax, international and local payments

  • Managed US sales tax: For businesses new to Shopify, Shopify calculates, collects, and remits tax to each US state.
  • Managed Markets: International prices can include duties and taxes, with flat shipping at checkout.
  • More local payment methods: Alipay, WeChat Pay, Satispay, Scalapay and GrabPay, with MB WAY and OXXO for online payments.
  • Payouts: A cleaner date-based payouts view, and payouts in more currencies for Advanced and Plus plans in Australia, France, Singapore and Hong Kong.
  • Coming soon or early access: HSA and FSA payments in Shop Pay (US only), and Shop Pay Installments in Australia.

Our take: worth reviewing now. If you use Shopify Payments, open Protect and read the rules before Black Friday. Backtest any custom rule against past orders first. A rule that is too strict will block good customers on your busiest day.

3. Retail and POS updates

If you only sell online, you can skim this part. For stores with POS, the useful changes are:

  • Wider customer recognition: POS identifies more shoppers through people who have paid at any store using Shopify Payments. Shopify says a known in-store customer has over 60% higher lifetime value.
  • Scheduled stock counts: Set counts in the admin by item, location, and timeframe, and staff complete them in POS.
  • Recent carts across devices: Any associate can pick up a sale that another one started.
  • Staff tools: Sales tracked to each associate, a POS activity log, and bulk staff upload by CSV.
  • Faster checkout: Fewer taps for cash and split payments, local delivery as a shipping option, and abandoned online carts that staff can complete in store.

Our take: situational. Scheduled stock counts and shared carts are the ones worth switching on first. They fix daily problems rather than adding new ones.

E. Admin, analytics and automation

1. A redesigned admin

The admin has a new look, rolling out to all pages soon. Navigation can collapse, and search, notifications, and the store picker have moved into the side navigation. Sidekick has a floating prompt at the bottom of each page. For long tasks, it expands into a side panel. The Shopify mobile app has also been rebuilt for speed on iOS and Android.

2. Small admin upgrades that add up

  • Passkeys for faster, safer sign-in.
  • Store policies generated for you that stay in sync with your edits.
  • Folders for organizing files.
  • A store status checklist that shows what you must do to stay in good standing.
  • A filterable activity log showing which staff member, app, or service made each change. This one is coming soon.

3. Analytics and Flow

Analytics now has interactive bubble maps, app events like loyalty points redeemed, manual annotations, and grouping by category metafields and metaobjects. Sessions also use smarter bot filtering, so expect your session numbers to shift when this reaches your store. Flow can now trigger when a product’s price, tag, or metafield changes, and you can restore any earlier version of a workflow.

Our take: low effort. Most of this arrives on its own. Add annotations to your reports before Black Friday so you can explain traffic spikes later.

F. Marketing and the Shop app

1. Marketing

  • Campaign Autopilot now runs AI-powered campaigns on Microsoft Advertising and Snapchat, with X Ads coming soon, and manages SEO too.
  • Unified marketing reports separate traffic sources so channels get fewer misattributed sales.
  • Shop Campaigns expanded to more than 35 new markets, and you pay only when an ad drives a sale.
  • WhatsApp: Collect marketing consent at checkout and send automated abandoned cart, browse, and checkout messages from Shopify Messaging.
  • A pre-built Black Friday email campaign you can preview, customize, approve, and schedule in Shopify Messaging.
  • New ad channels: TikTok Buy Direct for select businesses, and a ChatGPT Ads app.

2. The Shop app and shop.com

Shoppers can now add products from several brands to one cart and check out in one tap. The new shop.com adds curated content and detailed order tracking. Carts also sync both ways between the Shop app and your online store. Early access features include syncing your store’s branding to your Shop page.

Our take: test small. Schedule the Black Friday email today, since it is the easiest win in the whole Edition. Try Campaign Autopilot with a small budget before you trust it with a big one.

3. Fulfillment and shipping

  • Shop Promise badge: A badge for trusted delivery and returns. Products with it rank higher in Shop app and Catalog search. Shopify says eligibility grew 20 times.
  • More carriers: DHL Express in the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain. DHL eCommerce in the Netherlands and Poland. Royal Mail pickup points in the UK. UPS international labels and Canada Post return labels in Canada.
  • FedEx delivery photos appear on the order as evidence for disputes.
  • Native stock counts you can schedule by store, with barcode scanning and logs.
  • Order tools: Return and cancellation rules by market, extra discounts on existing orders, subscriptions on draft orders, and automatic tax recalculation when you edit a shipping address.

Our take: check eligibility. Shop Promise is a free program for eligible US stores, so it is worth a look. Everything else depends on which carriers and countries you ship from.

G. For developers and agencies

This is where the Shopify new update 2026 gets serious, because some changes break things.

1. Changes that need action

  • Script tags: Apps can no longer create or update script tags. They must move to theme app extensions or web pixels.
  • Expiring tokens: Apps must migrate to expiring offline access tokens before January 2027 to stay listed in the Shopify App Store.
  • Unique app names: App names must be unique and recognizable.
  • Verified reviews: App Store reviews are now checked against shop trust, identity, and app activity.

2. New tools

  • Agent tooling: WebMCP tools let agents search, build carts, and guide checkout on stores.
  • Theme architecture: A new Liquid approach with blocks, typed contracts, partial updates, and built-in Tailwind (developer preview).
  • Hydrogen: Customer accounts, predictive search, agent skills, and one-click Vercel deploys.
  • Dev Dashboard: A refreshed dashboard. Listing, pricing and app ads from it are coming soon.
  • App Pricing: Unlimited private plans, and an annual plan with monthly usage charges (coming soon).
  • Security: A security check through the AI Toolkit, and IP allowlists for API calls.
  • Partner earnings: Partners earn from subscription revenue and online GMV for every business they bring to Shopify, on all plans, for four years.

Our take: act now if you build or maintain apps. The script tag and token changes have real deadlines. For the rest, the new theme architecture is the one to follow closely, since it changes how themes will be written.

What to do before Black Friday?

Black Friday 2026 falls on November 27. Here is the order we would work in, from quickest wins to bigger jobs:

  • Run the Catalog eligibility check. Fix whatever it flags so AI channels can show your products.
  • Review your knowledge base. Approve your returns, shipping, and FAQ facts, and tighten any vague policy.
  • Add compare-at prices to sale items. Agents will then show shoppers the markdown.
  • Schedule your sale as a rollout. Bundle the discount and price catalog, and set it to roll back when the sale ends.
  • Open the Shopify Protect app. Read the rules, and backtest any custom rule on past orders.
  • Schedule the Black Friday email. Use the pre-built campaign in Shopify Messaging.
  • List every app that uses script tags. Ask the app owners about the migration, and ask your developer about expiring tokens if you build apps.
  • Leave Canvas for January. Test it on a duplicate theme once the sale is over.

Final Thoughts

The updates that will pay off fastest are the plain ones. Accurate policies, clean product data, and a launch you have scheduled in advance matter more than any single new feature.

Pick two or three items from the action list and finish them this week. If your app code, theme, or checkout needs deeper work, our Shopify development services team can help.
